Another true crime that is fascinating to me and has never been solved is the "Black Dahlia." The case remains one of Hollywood's long-running mysteries and one of the most gruesome of the 1940s. Elizabeth Short (The Black Dahlia) was found cut in half and posed in a sexually explicit pose in a vacant lot. This murder was sensationalized in the media as the "Black Dahlia" murder. I have included 3 of my favorite sites relating to this murder. But be warned that the third link has some very disturbing photos of the murder scene. You will have to click a link to view them, so if you just want to read about the murder then do not click the links to the photos. webapp1.latimes.com/theblackdahlia/www.theblackdahliainhollywood.com/The link with the photos: www.bethshort.com/the-murder.php

Cool links! My work won't let me go to the last one . I'll have to do that at home. I've never read a lot about the Black Dahlia - heard of her of course. That second link sure is in depth!!

Hi Angel.....sure hope you got to go to the last url I listed. It is truly an interesting story and one that has captured my interest for many years. I guess the fact that the killer was never captured makes this story more interesting to me. Any murder that doesn't have an ending to it....keeps my interest peeked.
how many times did I say interest or interesting??? hehehe~

I had heard of this story before, but had forgotten. I wonder if the murderer ever did this type of crime again? If it was somebody she knew?

Some crime authors have speculated on a link between the Short murder and the Cleveland Torso Murders, also known as the Kingsbury Run Murders, which took place in Cleveland between 1934 and 1938. The original LAPD investigators examined this case in 1947 and discounted any relationship between the two, as they did with a large number of killings that occurred before and afterward, well into the 1950s.
Other crime authors have suggested a link between the Short murder and the 1945 murder of 6-year-old Suzanne Degnan in Chicago, Illinois, who was also dismembered (and Short's body was discovered near Degnan Boulevard in Los Angeles). However, William Heirens (the so-called "Lipstick Killer") confessed to the Degnan murder and was in jail when Short's body was discovered.

Vickie, thanks for posting these links. I had seen part of this on "The Most Shocking Hollywood Murders" on TV these links go into so much more details. If this wasn't a serial killer but someone who knew Short then they must have really had a lot of anger toward her. This is a gruesome killing. In all probability whoever killed her is now deceased and never confessed to the killing. As I have said before we don't know what kind of people we walk beside of in a mall and what they are capable of doing.

That sure is the truth Susan, and a very scary part of life. Of course their is no evidence of a serial killer or the fact that a single individual did this horrendous murder, but I believe it was definitely someone that knew her and had such contempt for this woman that he went way and beyond the term "overkill". The criminal mind has always fascinated me, and I would really love to interview some of these killers just to get a glimpse of their mental sickness. For us the "sane" it is so hard to understand how someone could even think of doing something like this to another human being!

I agree Vickie there has to be a very evil and twisted person to do these things to other human beings. I can understand anger but how does it go so far as to kill someone. I agree that someone who knew Short did this killing with a lot of contempt. I wonder if the person or persons ever had any remorse as they became older. Probably not. That's another thing that "sane" people can't understand is that some people have no real conscience and they enjoy hurting other people.

To do things that were done to her, the guy (and it had to be a guy) was either intimate with her or wanted to be. If they weren't intimate they knew each other well.
If they were intimate, then he may have become upset because she was intimate with others too (maybe in an effort to advance her career). If they were not intimate he may have become upset because they weren't, and maybe he knew she was giving it to others just not him.
I don't think it was a complete stranger. For a stranger to have done these types of things he would have be mad at the whole female gender and there would have been more/similar killings.
He probably did not feel remorse later in life, he most likely felt justified. Though he probably felt sad that she was gone.
I'm not a trained case profiler, but I'd like to play one on tv.

Good points, Brian. You are probably correct that this was a situation where they were intimate and he wasn't the only one she was intimate with. You would make a good case profiler.

Some called "her a prostitute" and others, "just a friendly type of woman", but it has been said that she dated MANY men. I have always thought that it had to be someone that knew her, there was too much damage done to her. Was it revenge, jealousy, hatred, rejection? I'm like you Brian, I'm not a trained professional but this story is one that captivates you and makes you wonder why someone could be so devious as to do what was done to her.

Sounds like a lot of hatred and it sounds like the person might have been a very strong person also to have cut her up like that. As Brian said more than likely this person was intimate with her and didn't like others being intimate with her. I'm guessing that is why he left her body in the pose that he did. It gives you shivers to see how she was left. I don't believe anyone deserves that.

The pieces of the corpse appear carefully arranged to make a statement of mocking power. The killer could have buried the body or dropped it in the ocean. Left in a residential neighborhood, it was meant to speak. He left her like he intended to, to humiliate her with that suggestive pose in front of the whole world.
