It's been said that Dr. Spotiswood Taylor, a pathologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, was in Stokes County visiting his brother John Taylor, sheriff of Stokes County, at the time that Charlie Lawson killed his family and that he and Or. Helsabeck removed Charlie Lawson's brain and that Or. Spotswood Taylor took Charlie's brain with him when he returned to Johns Hopkins University and there performed an autopsy on it. Where did they remove Charlie's brain? Germanton had no hospital. Was Charlie's body taken to a hospital in Winston-Salem where his brain was removed or some other hospital in another city close to Germanton or was his brain removed in Or. Helsabeck's office and if so where was his office located if indeed he had an office. Just curious.

I know this is a serious question but I can't help myself...
This might be a nobrainer!

Talking about laughing reminds me of something I heard recently...that there were two Charlie Lawsons in that family at that time...the one who killed his family and a nephew of Charlie Lawson's by the same name. To distinguish between the two they were nick named by family and friends as Laughing Charlie and the other one as Loping Charlie. The Charlie that killed his family was the one called Laughing Charlie. It's really sad that at some point the laughter in Charlie Lawson's soul was over taken and replaced with something sick and evil. And the pure sweet laughter that once rang out so beautifully from his children was silenced forever and far too soon.

I guess that it's pretty obvious where Laughing Charlie got his moniker, (although maybe not so obvious to the folks
that only knew of him post-mortem). Any idea where Loping Charlie got his nickname?

From his manner of walking. He had big feet that didn't quite match up with his body size and long legs that mac him look like he was loping along instead of walking. You see this right often in tall thin people with large feet..it's like they never quite grow into their feet. This kind of walking (or loping) causes some people to accus them of having an arrogant stride. But it isn't arrogance. Their feet are just too long. In a way it's strange that he was called laughing Charlie because I never heard anyone say that they ever heard Charlie Lawson laugh. That doesn't necessarily mean he never did, it just means I've never heard that he did. I've heard him described as crazy, hardworking, a good provider, and a man who loved his family. But I've never heard him described as a man with a good sense of humor or a man who laughed easily and often. Or even that he ever laughed at all. But I suppose he must have or else the moniker makes no sense.

I agree Maria must have really spent many hours researching the family. Not just the murders but the family themselves.

This is an up-date on my original thread here concerning where the removal of Charlie's brain and the original autopsy was performed. I have located a news paper article (thanks to Sissy) about this question. According to the news paper the removal/autopsy on his brain was done at the funeral home in Madison. N.C. where the bodies of the family members were kept prior to the funeral. The brain was later taken by Dr. Spotswood Taylor to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore for a more extensive examination. Thank you Sissy for your help here.
