I had always just assumed that Arthur wore his new suit to the funeral. Almost everyone (shown in the casket picture) was wearing a suit. Arthur is wearing an overcoat and holding what appears to be a bowler hat in his hand, so I always thought he was wearing his brand new suit.
I was examining that picture today, zooming in and looking around, and I realized he isn't wearing a suit. He is wearing overalls, like his uncle. If you doubt it, look at the baggy right pants leg, he is also wearing boots. In the plainly visible overalls a few people down from Arthur you can see a breast pocket with a flap and a button to close it. Look closely under Arthur's right lapel and you can make out the same type of flap pocket.
I am totally surprised by this. Maybe it wasn't that unusual an outfit back then in that rural a community.

Good Lord Brian, you are so right. He does have on overalls, overcoat and work boots. I never noticed that before. You have excellent observation powers. Have I told you lately how glad we are that you joined our forum!!!!!!!!!!!!! I too assumed he wore his new suit. But he didn't. I wonder now if he ever wore it again.

I don't believe that if I had been Arthur that I would have ever wanted to wear the suit again. I just feel that Charlie was probably planning this when he bought the clothes for everyone and Arthur may have thought this also.

I don't think you've mentioned that lately, Maria, but I don't mind hearing it anytime you'd like to remind me. ;D I'm glad you agree with me, I spent awhile trying to confirm my suspicion. If Arthur had been murdered he would have been wearing that suit that day. I'm sure Arthur thought of that too.

Jeez, I just assumed he wore that "suit" on the day of the funeral. I wonder if anyone else here has a different opinion as to why Arthur didn't wear his new suit on the day of the funeral. I too believe it was because of memories.
It does look however like Arthur has a jacket on under that overcoat. If you will look at his right wrist that is clearly visible you will see a double layer of clothing. Of course this could also be a long sleeve shirt.

The overcoat is understandable since it was a cold day on the day of the funeral. But the old worn looking work boots don't go along with a suit.

Maybe new shoes for the family were not bought. In the family portrait there is no indication of anyones feet, so how do we know that they even had "good" shoes. Maybe this was the only pair of shoes (boots) that Arthur had.

New dresses, new leggings, new suits, but old shoes. Hmmm.

Just saying their feet aren't shown which is the case in most standing photograpy. They may very well have new shoes, but we will never know.

I think in all likelihood they were bought new shoes butb we can't know for sure since as you pointed out their feet weren't showing in the photo. However, at least we've seen a pair of Arthur's shoes now. Never saw anyone's shoes in that family before.

Brian, it's too bad you never went into police/detective work. They are really missing out by not having you!!! You are one of the most observant people I have ever met!!

Thank you Angel. I think I would like to detective work of some kind, but its probably too late in life for that. I do try to pay attention to detail. The hard part is figuring out what the details mean. I do get the figuring out part wrong at times. You need to see the very small details that most people don't even see. Sometimes they mean nothing, sometimes they speak volumes. There are different aspects to my personality that help with detecting, they don't help parts of life though.

Idk if I was him I wouldn't have wanted to wear the new clothes. Would have made it that much harder on me.

I agree Sissy. Arthur may very well have realized that the new suit his father bought him was intended to be his funeral suit. Arthur had no way of knowing that his father did not intend to kill him too. This of course we have no way of knowing for certain but I'm betting the farm that this is the very thing Arthur believed.

You know, we talk about Arthur not wearing his suit because he may have thought it was to be his burial suit, bought by his father. In one of the recent re-posts someone called capsh, claiming to be Arthur's granddaughter, said that Arthur always insisted his father did not commit the murders. If Arthur believed that Charlie did not commit the murders then why did he not wear his suit?
Of course it is possible that publicly he denied his father did it, trying to save face and retain some dignity, while internally he knew his father did it.
