I agree with your thoughts that it was more like a circus than a funeral with all of the people that came just to see the bodies. Sadie's description is really I believe the best at describing how bad everything was. It didn't glorify anything just told the horrible details. Sometimes we don't think of all the details that must have been present that day. It must have been really bad for the children that were there. This also had to be even worse for the family members. This was their loved ones being gawked at and people in trees so they could see more had to be hard for the family members.

It makes you wonder why the family didn't choose to have a private ceremony with family and close friends. The family had to of been aware of the publicity the murders caused, and would certainly have expected rubber necks to be there.
All of us have morbid curiosity, but there is a time we must all try to control it, at the expense of others.

Wonder if they would have even been able to have a private ceremony. I think all those people would have come no matter what and how can you keep 5,000 people away?

You can't keep them away. It was too big of a true horror story and people in those parts at that time had never encountered anything remotely like those murders so of course interest was intense. It was also the Christmas holidays with school still out and people had more free time on their hands. I would have gone myself!!! There might even have been more people there that day than there were if the roads had not been icy and treacherous.
