This story at first was the biggest thing that ever happened in Stokes County and some say it put them on the map; it was used as a tourist attraction that propped up Stokes County's economy directly for some and indirectly for others throughout the Great Depression, (since Mineral Springs' traffic had dried up with the advent of new roads up to the mountains' hot springs and everyone from Marion and Sam Hill's families profited from the tours, while gas stations nearby served the long lines of cars, restaurants in the area had increased business, etc),
while by night, it became the local haunted house that people congregated to for Masonic initiation rituals, mass ghost hunts with dozens of people at a throw on any given night waiting for midnight when the cradle was supposed to rock [although consulting a picture would have disproven That, since the cradle wasn't the Type that rocked], and other activities written about in newspapers over the years,
but the ballad used to be sung as a warning from abusers to their families to behave or else, whereas now that's been turned on it's head and it's being used as a warning from families to the abuser to behave or else.
Now, since the house has been torn down, there's nowhere really besides the graveyard to gather in search of the ghosts. That's where our message forum comes into the story.
It's been the source of endless speculation and gossip while the underlying root causes have gone largely unaddressed, leading to an epidemic of domestic violence that keeps Stokes county's courtrooms overbooked. Our message forum acts as a community clothesline where people gather, speculate, gossip, And address the underlying causes, in many cases discussing domestic violence in their own families, and how it affected their lives, relating their experiences and offering advice to others who seek to put to rest the ghosts of their past, or just hear a little more about The Appalachian Boogeyman, Charlie Lawson and the tragedy that befell his family once upon a time.
