We've talked in here about other haunted places such as Payne Road and Patrick County, Virginia. But not about the most important place of all which is the Lawson house. Is anyone familiar with the stories about the Lawsonhouse that ocurred in February and March in 1930? There were a couple of articles in the Winston-Salem Journal (March, 1930 edition) about a group of boys that went to the Lawson house after dark and entered the house at the stroke of midnight. They were there to investigate stories they had heard that some people claimed that when they had gone inside the house one night at midnight they heard the mantel clock strike 12 times and heard what sounded like a baby cradle making a "clack clack clackcing sound on the floor as well as heard the sound of fire popping and crackling in the fireplace. Has anyone else heard this story? If so do you any any more info on it? Maria

The newspaper articles are really interesting. The rumors spread right away that the house was haunted, it didn't long at all for tales of strange doings to pop up. It was within a year that the ghost stories were widespread enough that a large group, over 100 I think, went to the house one night hoping to prove or disprove the stories once and for all. The newspapers say that they waited around the house, and most of the people got bored and left, having seen nothing. But the last few who remained claimed that some events happened and one person walked away with some serious injuries that were never fully explained... Eric

My Aunt that lived near the house had to pass by it a lot going to work and she would tell about seeing a light in the window but no one lived in the house at that time. She also said that a lot of people that lived around it heard sounds like crying coming from near the house. I'm sure there are a lot more stories out there. Linda Smith

I never heard any of the Lawson family say the house was haunted. I remember going to the Lawson house with my Dad and his uncle but I was made to sit in the truck and wait for them to come out with an old butter churn which we still have today. Doug Boulding

Guess I can't really weigh in on this since we all know how I feel about this one. But I do sympathize with those who've never seen evidence of the "other side"; they just have to take it on faith, take my word, or some one else's word - for me, it's a flat simple fact. I know what I saw. All I have to rely on is my memory, which admittedly diminishes over time, but the funny thing about this story is how clearly it sticks in your head so many years after... Matt32

I know for a fact that Matt saw ghosts in the Lawson house in 1979. I didn't SEE any BUT, I felt their presence very strongly while I was there with Matt and my Mom that day. Matt was always the one to see ghosts while I was the one who felt their presence and sometimes heard their voices. I have a long history of supernatural experiences. Every premonition I ever had, and I had hundreds, came true. Not one single failure in 25 years. I truly believe the Lawson house was haunted. I'll say this for certain, if it wasn't, no other place on earth was or is. Ghosts do not exist if they don't exist there. Maria

I do believe you and Matt experienced the spirits of the Lawson family that day so long ago when you visited the house. I felt them at their graves and walking on the land and all around. This family will always be around for their spirits are not at rest yet. Linda Smith

Are the only spirits that are seen or that return the spirits of those who are not at rest? The ghosts of the Lawson children that Matt saw upstairs in the Lawson housewere playing ball, seeminly enjoying themselves. Maria

I read in TMOOT that a couple of months after the murders occured, there were rumors of ghosts and unexplained occurrences in the cabin. The book said that at midnight every nite, Fannie's cook stove would glow red hot. Of course these were rumors, whether they are fact or not.....who knows.
This bothered Arthur really bad and he wanted to see for himself if the rumors were true, so he and Sander's Lawson went to the cabin at the midnight hour. They went to the side of the cabin where the kitchen was, and Sanders stuck his hand through the window and touched the top of the stove. It was stone cold. They left, and Arthur was relieved and felt better knowing that it was just an awful rumor.

Thanks for pointing out that the rumor had no credibility. Vickie. The part about the cradle making a rocking sound is false too. Marylou's baby bed did not have rocker legs on it, just plain straight legs.
