Could someone tell me more about the club Charlie was in. Is the symbol on the tombstone from the club kind of looks like a mason symbol.

Hi Cephus,
Charlie Lawson was a member of The Junior Order of United American Mechanics...an organization similar to the
Masons but not the same. The Junior Order was exclusively male and very secretive. They met in the homes of
different members in the community .They donated a lot to orphanages and the likes. Here is a link to their site:

Elsie (Kiger) Warren called me this morning to ask me if I would like to have a photo of her father Sollie Kiger to put in the Scrapbook. I said, "well I don't know, was he connected in any way with Charlie Lawson" and she said heck yes, he was a good friend of Charlies and was a member along with Charlie Lawson in the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. So I hollered back "heck yeah I do" so she said she would give me one that she thinks was taken around that time, 1929. That got me to thinking how it would be nice to know who the men were that were in that organization. So I called Bettye Rutledge and she said her grandfather Joseph Montgomery was a member of that. I already have a photo of him. It was at Joseph Montgomery's wife's wake one week before the murders that Charlie made his infamous comment "I wouldn't mind dying if I could take my family with me". Elsie (Kiger) Warren was Maybell Lawson's best friend. And the pictures just keep coming!!!!!!

I've seen that book on Amazon. It looks pretty interesting for Stokes County stuff.
But for Lawson stuff - nothing is gonna beat Maria's scrapbook!! Nothing! And I can't wait to see it!!!

I think it has one of the caskets lined up in the cemetery and the murder scene, MAYBE. But no more than that I don't think.

Just that one funeral pic- Chad was a real pleasure to work with, going out of his way to not make us feel nervous that we were nobodies interviewing a somebody about something bigger than all of us. Beyond bending over backward to work with our schedule for his interview, he was gracious and patient enough to help me track down permissions on pictures from his book to use in our film.
Mr Tucker's proof positive that what gets you ahead is hard work and being nice to people, and it reaffirms my belief that beyond the surface level appearance of vacuity and vice we're most known for, this industry I work in is full of some of the best and brightest, most down to earth folks imaginable.
Quick trivia question for those into related minutae, how many pix from Chad's book appeared in our film?

At least the scrapbook won't have a picture of my grandpa making moonshine...lol...
For those of you who have the Stokes County book, there are two? pictures of my daddy in there (the little boy standing outside of King School) and one of the last pictures in the book, with three boys and bicycles. I won't post his name here, but it is mentioned in the book. Mr. Tucker and I had a blast going through my "ten year" box of pictures digging through figuring out things he could use. The picture of the "unidentified" four men making moonshine; or "busting up a still" is my grandfather, step grandfather, and two others I won't name; their descendants would kill me, lol. I think my grandfather is the man on the far right, don't have it right in front of me....
The pictorial book that Mr. Tucker did is part of what makes the scrapbook sure to be a success. A picture is worth a thousand words....and putting faces and places out there shows a story in a way no words can. But now, if someone wanted to write a FACTUAL account of the murders...hint...hint...

Since Charlie was a member of the Junior Order I wonder if his brothers were. To quote Rev. Oakley Manring, "hey, it stands to reason"....Bettye Rutledge said that the club met in the upstairs of her grandfather's store. What all is said and goes on in those clubs, that one, the Masons, the Elk, etc. are always shrouded in secrecy. If they aren't plotting something bad or illegal or doing things of an immoral nature, why the secrecy? I understand the "exclusive" (men only) part of those meetings but I've never understood the need for secrecy and oaths if all they're doing is voting on giving money to an orphanage or sending a young boy to camp or buying someone a pair of eyeglasses.

I just saw in an article that the Junior Order of American Mechanics was a religiously oriented club so I wonder why Charlie Lawson joined it since it's been said he was opposed to church.

Religious or not, it was still a club (for men only right?) filled with secrecy. I'm sure as a man, that appealed to him. And maybe he just didn't want Fannie going to church. At church, you get to see a lot of people and talk (and gossip) and with that comes getting ideas into your head - like telling your friends how crazy your husband has been acting and them telling you he needs to be taken away to get help.
Just speculating!

That was a fine piece of specerlating Angel, I'm serious. He probably was afraid she'd catch up with her friends and relatives and tell them everything he was doing. I'd never thought of that before. Fine post you presented!!!!!!
