Maria, You asked what was thrown into the fire other than the pillows. The book The Meaning of our tears says that all of Fannie and Charlie's and the children's clothing, shoes and personal items from the dresser drawers was burned but doesn't mention anything else other than of course the pillows. It says that it was some years after the murders before the burning of their things took place. It says that Stella watched as her father Marion Lawson burned the things.

Thank you so much Bobby for answering my question. I wish they had kept at least one or two items of clothing from them. I wonder if Arthur approved of their personal belongings being burned up or if Marion even asked him if it was okay to burn them.

The book says it was years...wonder why they kept the bloody pillows so long?
(Thanks for posting that BobbyWayne!!)

I guess the pillows and other stuff was kept for the showing of the cabin.

That's horrible! They left the cabin the way it was the day of the murders for the tours? I thought they had cleaned it up (I know the floor was still stained though).

No wonder so many people went to tour the cabin. A lot of people besides me had a morbid streak.

If your speaking to me - I've never toured the cabin. Have you?
However, it would be extremely hard to get blood out of wood and there have been many people who have stated that the floor was stained.
Also, Maria has a picture posted of herself on the memorial bridge (built from wood from the cabin) and she's pointing at a blood stain on the wood.

I've been told by a number of people that they were never able to get all of the blood stains removed from the floor boards although it had been scrubbed many times so yes the blood stains were still visible on the floor boards when all those people toured the house.

I just spoke with someone a few minutes ago and she said that she was sure she had seen a picture somewhere at sometime that showed the burning of the Lawson things that no one wanted but that she was pretty certain the burning took place not long after the murders. She said if she remembered correctly there was a crowd of people standing around the fire watching those items being burned rather than just Marion out there by himself with a shovel burning clothes and pillows with only Stella as a witness to it. She said she would try to remember where she saw that photo and get back to me on it.

I have no idea if he wanted them or not. It seems strange that the raisin cake was kept for so many years but nothing of the family's personal belongings. I don't know this but it's possible that Arthur may have kept something from the personal effects of his mother's and sisters and brothers. I haven't heard that he did or didn't. But we continue to hear so many things that we've never heard before so it remains a possibility that we will hear things like whether Arthur took anything or what happened to the mantel clock, etc. at sometime in the future. Probably when we least expect to!!

For some reason, I would think that Arthur would have kept the clock. Clocks weren't cheap and seemed to be family heirlooms....or maybe my family's just obsessed with them, since we all have old old clocks around that were "great- grandpa bubba's" or "great grandma Betty Bubba's".

There had to have been other people present when the Lawson personal effects were burned because Sam Hill was there I know because he grabbed the shotgun out of the fire. So either there was more than the one time burning described where Marion and Stella were the only ones who were present or somebody got their tale wrong.

I don't know Angel. I can't tell for certain but it looked like an old clock even then. Did Fannie's parents give it to her or Charlie's parents or did Charlie buy it for Fannie 1 wonder. It was a fancy clock, like what you would buy for or give to a woman.

You're right Maria, I remember the lady who owns the shotgun talking about her great-grandfather reaching into the fire and pulling the shotgun out when I met her at the picnic, so he was there when Marion burned those things. The author said in The meaning of our tears that Marion and Stella were alone that day when they closed the Lawson house for good and burned all of those clothes and things. Another error strikes again.

That's the truth Tim!! A lot of money. I'd love to have seen those things too. My Aunt Lucille has a dress and bonnet that belonged to one of my great grandmothers and I love to look at it and touch it every time I go to her house. Another thing she has that I love is a special fork made for one of my great grandfathers Anderson Douglas who had his right arm blown off at Chancellorsville during the Civil War. It has a fork on one side and a knife on the other side of it so that he could cut and scoop up the food with only one hand. She also has some buttons from his uniform and his bayonet. These items are priceless, especially for his descendants like me.
