FAMILY OF SEVEN IS BURIED TODAY
Walnut Cove, N.C.- A plot in the Bowder burying ground near Germanton, waited today to receive the bodies of CHARLES D. LAWSON, Stokes Co. farmer, his wife, and six children. Two pm was the hour set for the funeral. On Christmas Day, LAWSON, seized with a fit of insanity, slew the seven members of this family. He went to a patch of woods near the home a few minutes later and fired a bullet through his heart. A rifle and a shot-gun were found by the body.
Out of a family of nine, only a son, ARTHUR LAWSON, age 19, was spared. He was visiting an uncle near Germanton, when his father, wielding disjointed gun barrel, a rifle and a shot-gun, slaughtered the rest of the family.
The dead:
The father and mother both shot to death.
MARIE, 17, CARRIE, 14, and MARIBELLE, 10, slain with a shot-gun and rifle.
JAMES, 7, RAYMOND, 5 and MARY LOU, 5 months- beaten to death.
Neighbors of the family and persons living at a distance as they prepared today to attend the mass funeral wondered at the gruesome tragedy that horrified Stokes County in the midst of its Christmas celebration. CHARLES LAWSON, who owned his home and provided well for his family, had been a good neighbor. He was honest, sober and considerate, and especially kind to his family. The whole family remembered that a year ago he accidentally received a sharp blow on the head....Last night the funeral in charge said they were inclined to decide in favor of a single large grave...."

We've seen that error laden article before. They couldn't even get the ages of the children correct except for Marie!!! There are dozens of those articles all over the place. Even the heading of the article was wrong. It was a family of eight, not seven!!! 1. Charlie. 2. Fannie. 3.Marie. 4. Carrie. 5. Maybell. 6.James. 7. Raymond. 8. Marylou.

Everything about this entire story is interesting that's for sure. Most interesting to me is how there are so many errors, contradictions, etc. etc. there are. None of those reporters researched anything. They just talked to a bunch of people then printed the story and every time the press brings it back the story remains the same with the same errors.

The whole story is fascinating. It seems that we have a never ending supply of information. We get one thing figured out and three more pop up. But what is also interesting, is no matter how many articles you read there is always something a little different about the way the story is told.

Makes you wonder how many other stories in history were inaccurately reported and what actually happened is not what we have heard and learned.

It happens a lot, more times than not. Either because of shoddy research, or they print the story too soon before they get all the facts. Or as I suspect with regards to the Law son murders too many people giving their versions of what happened. A reporter covering a plane crash will say 80 people dead. An hour or two later more bodies will be uncovered, therefore the next article concerning the same crash will say 92 dead.

After reading this thread - I just happened across an article about errors in newspapers! Apparently this happens
quite a bit - nor just with the Lawson story!!

Oh Angel, that is a great link. I especially identify and agree with the sentence that says:
"But the incident does remind us that small errors have larger consequences. Not to mention misinforming or confusing the public."
This is why I have very little tolerance for people who print something that is out right wrong and ends up causing people to believe those errors and go on to misinform everyone else that they relate the story to. They in turn misinform those they tell it to and so on and so on. It has happened far too many times with the Lawson murders.

That is the very reason that I do not like either of the books that Trudy Smith wrote. There are so many errors in them that I've lost count. An occasional mistake is understandable but her books have far far too many of them. And that doesn't include the artistic license she took with so many of her stories. They are just as misinforming to the public as any mistakes or errors that are found in newspaper stories.

Her books are even worse because they are sold as being the truth. Maybe that is one book that we should hold a book burning for.
