I saw this on Ancestry.com on a woman's genealogy website on Charlie Lawson. Here is what it says:
The songs that were written about the "Charlie Lawson" murders were banned from the radio in North Carolina. The three songs are: The Lawson Family Murders by Doc Watson; Murder of the Lawson Family by Dave Alvin; and. Ballad of the Lawson Family by Mac Wiseman.
She didn't say when the 3 ballads were banned or for how long. I've never heard of this before. Has anyone else?

Hadn't heard that, but sounds about par for the course. You might remember that songs like "Patches (Down By The River)," "Teen Angel," and "Last Kiss" were banned from some radio stations back in the 50's due to their morbid subject matter. Hey, which albums are these tunes on by Doc and Mac?

Michael,
I know Teen Angel was banned in the United Kingdom but are you sure that it was banned in the U.S.A.? I love that song and I use to listen to it all the time when it was played on W.T.O.B. radio station in Winston-Salem. If it was banned when was it banned? The first time I heard it on W.T.O.B. was in 1958. I have a recording of that song and it has the same effect on me when I hear it today as it did when I was 12 years old.

Some stations here did indeed ban Mark Dinning's hit song. It wasn't banned everywhere, but in certain markets, particularly some in Mormon-dominated Utah. Sherry Holley remembers it not being played in Texas at first, but demand overpowered censorship, and it eventually was on air there. Incidentally, lack of radio play didn't hurt it. Teen Angel became a smash for Dinning, one of only a handful for him.

Well I sure am glad it wasn't banned in North Carolina or I would never have had the privilege of hearing it. Was the song Tell Laura I Love Her banned? It was very similar to Teen Angel.

That one, I'm not sure. Never heard anything concerning it, but, since it came out before Last Kiss, I would imagine something happened. Incidentally, have you ever heard nthe song "Laurie" by Dickey Lee, the guy who did "Patches?" It's similar in subject to "Bringing Mary Home."

No. I haven't even heard Bringing Mary Home. Was Mary the woman named Lydia coming home from the prom?

Same basic premise, yes. May even actually be the one about her, though I have also heard that song refers to another, older story.

Michael,
You asked what the name of the album was that had those 3 Lawson ballads that were banned. I don't believe (but am not certain) they were on an album but were singles. Incidentally I have a copy of those 3 particular ballads. A lady we interviewed copied them on a disk for me and sent them to me. I really like the one by Dave Alvin.

Rabble, rabble, rabble! My hero, Buddy Holly, was dead 10 years before I was born, but I love the music of his era!
Those of you who know the year Buddy died, now know how old I am!

Buddy Holly was one of my favorites too Michael. Especially his song Peggy Sue!! So you are not as old as me
because he died when I was in my teens.

New book coming out by Peggy Sue. She trashes Buddy's image by claiming to have had an affair with him... ON THE DOUBLE HONEYMOON IN MEXICO OF BUDDY AND MARIA ELAINA AND JI ALLISON AND PEGGY SUE!!! The Holly Family is LIVID (Sherry recorded some of my music, and Larry, Buddy's brother, said my writing reminds him of Buddy!!! :-))) }. and JI Allison, The Crickets' drummer, isn't too happy with her either. I personally think she's just trying to cash in on her friendship with him. Anyway, that was the first song of his I learned to play!
