Crazed Man Puts End to Own Life as Mind Cldars
Chasrles D Lawson, Well-to-do Stokes County Man Runs Amuch Christmas Day; Commits Suicide
Only One Escapes Wrath of Father
Seven Bodies Shot and Clubbed, Arranged for Burial by Killers
Walnut Cove, NC Dec 26
A Stokes County farmer's wife and six children lay dead today all the victims of a husband and father who had been kind to them until Christmas Day when a violet fit of insanity robbed him of his reason, caused him to slay them and then shoot himself to death with a shotgun.
The dead:
Charles D Lawson, 43, well to do farmer, who lived near Walnut Cove, his wife, 381, and six of their children; Marie, 17, Carrie, 14, Maribelle, 10, James 7, Raymond 5 and Mary Lou 5 monthsThe bodies of the mother and children, shot or beaten to death, were found yesterday afternoon in the blood stained Lawson house and a tobacco barn on the place. The hands of everyone of them were folded across their breasts, their heads pillowed, and their eyes closed. The father after butchering them, had carefully laid them out for burial.
Slayer Body in Woods:
Lying by a pathway in a parcel of woods a half a mile away was the body of the middle aged farmer. A single barrelled shotgun was nearby and in his pocket was a crunpled piece of paper unton which was scrawled: "Blame nobody but I"
A county coroner's jury found that Lawson slew his wife, six children, and himself in a fit of insanity. Arthur Lawson,, is the only member of the immedate family who remains alive. He was visiting an uncle near Germanton yesterday when his deranged father wiped out the rest of the family. The youth was grief stricken when he returned to find his father, mother, brothers and sisters dead. He was at loss in attempting to give a reason for his father's deed. He said his father had always been kind to him and other members of the family.
Brain Cells Degeneraated:
Coroner CJ. Halseback, after a post mortem at Madison where the bodies were taken to be prepared for burial, said an examination revealed what appeared to be signs of degeneration in some of Lawson's brian cells. This discovery Dr. Halsebeck stated served to discredit an earlier theory that a blow on the head about a year ago caused the farmer to become insane.
Plans were baeing completed today for a joint funeral for the seven embers of the family. Tentative arragements were made to hold the burian at 2pm friday at the Browder burial ground near Germanton
Brother Found Bodies:
Elijah Lawson a brother of the dead man was first to discover yesterday that something was wrong at the Lawson home. He found the bodies of his sister in law and four of the children, Marie, James, Raymond and Mary Lou in the Lawson home. He hastily summoned neighbors and a search revelaed the bodies of Carrie and Maribelle, the other two girls, in a tobacco barn about a quater of a mile away. Big splotches of blood in snow which lay on the gorund led to the finding of the bodies in the out house. Shortly afterwards the body of Lawson himself was discovered.
Reconstruct Tragedy:
Sheriff 3J. Jackson of Stokes County and Coroner Halsebaeck who conducted an investigation said they believed Lawson shot his wife as she held their 5 month old baby in her arms. Blood which apparently was that of the mother was found on the baby's clothing.
It appears that the crazed man then shot down Marie the oldest daughter and after slaying her beath the three youngest children to death with the disjointed barrel of a double barrelled shot gun. The gun barrel!, twisted and bloodstained, was found in the room. The three children were slain with a blunt instrument.
Two of the girls Carrie and Maribelle, the seriff and coroner believed fled from the house terror-stricken. The father bereft of his reason, pursured them and shot them in the back as they ran to the tobacco barn. Only shot gun wounds were found on the body of Marybelle, the youngest, but Carrie had been wounded with a shot gun and shot rhrough the heart with a 25-20 calibre rifle. Both guns were found, the shot gun near Lawson's body.
Used Sacks for Pillows:
Lawson carefully placed the bodies of these two daughters in the tobacco barn. He folded their hands over their breasts and closed their eyes. Having no pillows to put under their heards, as he died the others he used pieces of two sacks to soften their resting place.
The seriff and coroner, in re constructing details of the tragic afternoon, said Lawson then probably returned to the dwelling house and prepared the bodies of the five memberss of the family he had killed. He closed their eyes and folded their hands in the tobacco barn and put pillows under the ehads of everyone of them.
The coroner said ti was possible that with this act of tenderness asembling of reason returned to the insane farmer, overwhelming him and causing him to rush from the house and slay himself.
Lawson shot himself through the hearrt.

That's one of the more error filled news reports I've seen. Fascinating!!!!!! They place the bodies of Carrie and Maybell in the tobacco barn then later on in the article place them in the out house!! They didn't even have an out house. The article also has a number of words misspelt, amuch is one of those words, Charles Lawson's name was spelt Chasrles (good grief Charlie Brown!!) violent was spelt violet, crumpled was spelt crunpled, brain was spelt brian, being was spelt baeing, burial was spelt burian, members was spelt embers, immediate was spelt immedate, Helsabeck was spelt Halsabeck, arrangment was spelt arragement, hastily was spelt ha stilly, beat was spelt beath, members was spelt memberss, sheriff was spelt seriff, it was spelt ti, and what in tarnation is the word unton? That article has over eleven words misspelt. They also have Sheriff Taylor's name wrong. They called him J.J. Jackson!!! His name was John Taylor, not Jackson. The ages of most of the victims are wrong also. In the very first line of the article it says: Crazed man puts end to own life as mind Cldars. What the heck is Cldars? It says Fannie was 381 years old. As I said, this news report is fascinating!!!!!!! Thanks for posting this one Laurie.
