Can anyone in here help me with this question? Carolina Buddies recorded the largest selling record of the Lawson Murders. Walter "KID" Smith composed the ballad and was lead vocalist on the record. Lewis McDaniel was on the guitar and Robert "BUSTER" Carter was tenor/vocalist. And a guy by the last name Rorer was on fiddle. My question is this: I've heard the name BUSTER SMITH in connection to this famous and well loved ballad but was Smith's nick name BUSTER or was it Walter KID SMITH and was Robert Carter the one whose nickname was BUSTER? Columbia Records recorded it. It was recorded in June of 1930 and was one of the best selling Columbia old-time discs for that year, totaling 8,411 copies sold. It's one of my top two favorite recordings of all the records recorded about the
murders.

I don't know about Buster, but if my wife hasn't thrown it away I have one of the old records. If the first book is selling for $100, what is one of the original recordings worth?

I don't have an answer for the question that you proposed, yet, but I just found a link to the song. I'm at work, so I can't stream it. Hopefully others can, though.

Hi Coach,
A man I know who had the same record sold his recently for $25.00. I won't tell you what the name was that I called him. It's worth a whole lot more than that if it's in good condition.

Another FYI...the fiddle player's name was POSEY RORER.
He is kin to KENNY RORER who is the Historian on Charlie Poole!
I also produced a story for tv news about Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers!
Kenny and POSEY RORER were a part of that story and i recorded lots of video and sound of KENNY.POSEY and
FRIENDS sitting around one Saturday evening playing the old time music!
I was really Enlightened to know that i was sitting there also pickin my guitar along with them and especially the fact
that i was sitting next to POSEY RORER .knowing that he was one of the musicians on that FAMOUS recording that
they made of/The Ballad Of Charlie Lawson!
I made copies of the Video and gave it to KENNY for Posterity!
Kenny lives in the Madison-Mayodan area and use to have a daily/nightiy radio show in the area playing old-time and
blue grass music!
anyone in that area knows Kenny and can help you get in touch with him about the recording and the history
connected with it!
