I have been giving a lot of thought to the WHY part of this murder. I have entertained the idea that Marie was pregnant but by her boyfriend, Charlie Wade Hampton. As you know this would have been a scandal at the time and certainly would have brought about a degree of shame to the family and of course to Marie. In reading the follow-up book, The Meaning of our Tears I noticed the genealogical chart which is included in the photographs section. Fannie's mother, Nancy Lawson was born Jan 16, 1864. However on further review I noticed that her parents are noted as having married March 31, 1864. That means that she was bom over 2 months before they married. We all know the ramifications of such an act, even today. 8ut back then, this must have been a huge scandal. I think that given this fact, coupled with fact that the photo clearly shows that Marie was "showing" it could have driven Charlie to commit the murders. A man that is regarded highly in his community is no small feat. However, to have that esteem and regard yanked away from you must be a devastating experience. The rumors were probably rampant by this point and he knew it. Of course this is pure speculation but it does seem to provide a plausible reason and a viable explanation.
Any thoughts?

Hi Laurie,
Fannie's mother was not Nancy Lawson. Nancy Lawson was Charlie's mother. Fannie's parents were John and Onie Branch Manring. Fannie Lawson was born October 13, 1892.

Hey mcpepper -
We've heard this idea from a couple people before, that maybe it was her boyfriend Charlie Wade Hampton. There are a couple of reasons why I personally don't think it's likely to be true.
First of all, I would think that a man with such a known temper as Charlie Lawson would have confronted the Hampton family if he thought that Marie was pregnant by her boyfriend. And we've never heard a peep about such a thing happening. With all the sides to this story, and the way small towns talk, I can't imagine that if this was true it would remain a secret.
Second, it would definitely be a bad situation, but I don't think Marie would have been nearly as secretive with her family and her close fnends if it was her boyfriend.
Third, we've just heard so many more times that either she was pregnant and by her father, or she wasn't pregnant. Its pretty 50-50 between those two which people believe, and the other theories (pregnant by CWH or Arthur) are such in the minority that it just doesn't seem likely. Now that ain't proof, and sometimes the very minority are right, but...
Oh, just thought of a reason 4 - why wouldn't Charlie wait for CWH and kill him too? If Charlie picked a fight with a black man for overstepping his place in society, I think he'd do something about a boy getting his daughter pregnant. And he knew that CWH was supposed to come pick up Marie later that Christmas Day.
Those are my personal thoughts - anybody else?

Hi Eric,
To use one of todays sayings...I believe you are spot on here. You made some excellent points and I could not have explained it better myself. I especially like your reasoning concerning what Charlie Lawson would have done had he known Charlie Wade Hampton had gotten his daughter pregnant. That was a brilliant bit of deduction.

I totally agree with Eric. ! feel that if Charlie would have known of a "pregnancy" by CWH....he would have definitely confronted him.
