I have a question on the treatment of the Lawson family's animals.
There had been statements made that he was very mean to horses and mules....etc. I have also heard that he was gentle with his mule Maude until she died while hauling tobacco for the last time. Charlie even had the two new mules drag her out for burial. He also had two dogs (beagles, I think), correct? These dogs followed him to the suicide location, correct?
My question is, was he kind to his animals? Also, if he was enraged that day and the adrenaline was pumping enough......I am surprised he did not kill his animals also.

Interesting. I've never heard Charlie Lawson was mean to his animals. Or that he treated them well either. Do you remember where you heard that? His two hunting dogs Sam and Queen were by his side when he shot himself. Thanks for the info on the name Maude for one of his mules.

I read somewhere that one of the men that was Charlie's neighbor, saw him beat a horse he used to own. This man said that he had a different outlook on Charlie after that.
I am sure he did not treat his mules badly, as they had to work hard for him in tobacco.
Who got the dogs after the event?

I have no idea who got his dogs. But I would think Arthur got them. A neighbor took in his cat. Or so the book says. Carl Tuttle bought one of his mules at the auction for $170.00. E. R. Gordon bought his bay mule for $148.00. His brother Elijah bought his Guernsey cow for $85.00. And Hobert McGee bought his Jersey cow for $90.00.

When they had the auction or sale, who got the proceeds? Also, who received the proceeds from the house tours? Family or did the landlord get it to pay off the farm?

I think the treatment of Charlie's animals was in 'The Meaning of Our Tears". I too wonder what happened to his dogs and why he didn't kill them. They came back to his house the book stated and people followered them to where Charlie was. They were very loyal to him till the end.

Were the dogs indeed at Charlie's side when they found his body? Or does anyone know this for a fact?
Did the dogs also track blood through the snow? And wonder if they were following him the whole time during the events?
Just curious

Interesting question Holly. I can only answer as to what I personally was told by 3 people whose Fathers were there that day. As for the validity of their statements or the correctness of it I cannot say other that I can't imagine they lied. They said they were told that when they (their fathers) went to the woods at the sound of the shotgun going off they found Charlie lying dead on the ground and that his dogs Sam and Queen were by his side and that in fact they had been there with Charlie in the woods for so long that the snow had melted on the ground beneath where they lay. Whether they were with him the whole time of the shooting spree I have no idea. I haven't heard anyone say. I think we can be fairly certain they did not follow him into the house while he finished with his deed. And as for tracking blood anywhere I can only say I don't know but I doubt it. Charlie probably tracked through alot of the blood in the cabin and transferred some of that blood from his feet to the woods near the barn.

I remember when we went to the house on Christmas day 1979, the man who walked us over to the barn was
followed by a cat he said was descended from the lawson family's cat.

Thanks Maria for the info. It still puzzles me on why he (or someone) did not shot the animals. But, animals can not talk.....so I guess it did not matter that they lived or not.
Matt,
That is kind of creepy about the cat following you all around. Cats are known to be guardians of things "unseen". They are also known to be good luck and bad luck, depending on the situation I guess. I do not mean to sound wacky, but it is true. It is also cool that the cat is a descendant of the Lawson's cat. FYI....my mom said that when she visited the "Squire Inn", there were cats everywhere. She had to step over them to get to the door. Wonder if they are related also?

Hi Holly,
Some time ago I asked the owner of the Squires Inn and she said that none of her cats were Lawson cats. I thought it was cute how she called them Lawson cats.

I think "decorated" is too soft of a word. Squires Inn is covered inside with some of the most incredible painted murals I have ever seen covering the entire upstairs. Part of the contract to buy the place should be that you have protect those murals, I get sick at the thought of someone painting over them.

I agree with all of you on the Squire Inn. when we visited there that Sun. my son and I had a ball with the owner's. The house is very beautiful and the owner's really love it but they told us they were going to put it up for sale soon for they were both getting in bad health and it was hard to look after now. I hope who ever does buy it will take care of it and not paint over the paintings too. When we were outside of it the land ajoining it was the Lawson's and just looking up to where Charlie's family house once stood and the land he had made you wonder more about what really took place there years ago and what went wrong. The owner said also that the people who are now on the land that the Lawson house once stood has sold it to someone from up north that would still keep it as a horse farm. I asked her wonder if the owner's had told them about the Lawson family before they brought it and everything going on about it and she said maybe they hadn't yet. She said one day when they were taking the Lawson house down to make a garage that she told them the Lawson's may not like it and the lady said she didn't believe in ghost. She said the ghost at the Inn may help sale her's and then maybe not but that she had seen the Lawson children at the door and can hear them alot. I really believe she did and I wish her and her husband the very best whatever they decide to do.

Did the Lawson children often visit the Inn before the murders, or does anyone know? If so, did one of
their friends live there back then?

All I can tell you iluvnumber3 is what the lady that owns the Inn told me and Lee that Sun. when we were there. She said when they first moved in and it was the day after Christmas I believe she said that she was coming down the stairs and saw a boy and girl looking in the windows of the door and then they vanished. She had never seen a picture of the Lawson children till the first book came out and her son brought it to her and when she looked at the family picture she told her son that they were the children that she saw at the door. She said that during the Lawson time that the children came to play alot with the boy who use to live in the Inn. After seeing the children she said they came alot and she would hear them playing and she had found a ball one day and didn't know where it came from so she thought it may have been from the children. She was so cool to talk to and hear all these things and really she didn't know alot about the Lawson family when they first brought the house but she said after they started redoing the house that alot of things started happening in it. They are very nice people and I really don't think they made this up just for business. Oh, I did pick up on her having alot of cats, they were everywhere and she said they just come up there and she feeds them and they end up staying. The cats seem very glued to the house like they were watching after it for Lee noiced that and asked her if any of the cats had ever picked up on a spirit or something and she said that the one's that were in the house had before, we enjoyed our visit there so much and hope to go back before she puts it up for sale.
