Here is a link to the article. www.visitstokesnc.com/Default.aspx?tabid=85Anyone have family pics from this place? ladebug 02/21/07 at 11:34 AM ecalhoun The mineral springs were by far the major tourism attraction for Stokes County before the Great Depression. At the time, Winston Salem was a very wealthy and thriving city, and so many of the upper class would vacation up in Stokes County. However, we were told that tourism was heavily on the wane by 1929. Advances in the railroads and highways made travel to the Asheville area that much easier, and much of the clientele now made the trip to the western mountains to stay at those resorts. We wanted to include some of this history into the documentary, but it just didn't fit. You have to place the tourism from the house tours in the context of the recently collapsed mineral spnngs tourism. Everyone who had restaurants, gas stations, etc were desperate for visitors, and in the 1930's it was the Lawson's that brought them there.
