There have been remarks made in past about the window on the top floor. Some people say there was not an upstairs window, but there have been some shown in drawings and old photos. In the book "The Meaning Of Our Tears", it says that someone saw a person standing in the upstairs widow, when the bodies were first discovered. Then another person stated that there was no upstairs window, and that person could not have seen anyone.
In the pictures that are displayed on this site, there is indeed a window. For some of the children to sleep upstairs, there had to have been some light and ventilation. I am assuming that the people only viewed or remembered one side of the house, which I think the chimney was located. The upstairs was an attic space converted into a bedroom, correct? Was the window always there since it was originally built? Or was the window added later on? Also, are there anymore statements or stories to lead to Charlie (or someone) actually standing in the window when they first found the bodies?

The classic image of the house shows a side for which there isn't a window upstairs, and is the picture that most people see. It actually threw us off for quite a while, thinking that there wasn't a window upstairs. But, as you said, on the picture of the other side of the house, you can clearly see a window. That makes sense, as you pointed out, for all the reasons of having people live up there. I bet it was always there.
I believe the sighting of someone upstairs is attributed to Claude and Elijah Lawson, the first people on the scene. We heard about this, but never had a good quote. What I wouldn't have given if the interview with Claude had covered this!

Thank you Eric.
I wish we did know if Claude or Elijah did indeed see someone peering at them as they walked away for help. Charlie (or someone) probably did or would have had enough time to get to their destination.

The picture of that house reminds me of my grandparents old house. They had three rooms downstairs, the main room ,the kitchen and a bedroom. They had one big room upstairs they used as a bedroom. It had two windows one on both ends of the upstairs room.

The best guess is that Claude and Elijah saw Charlie when he went upstairs to get the children's pillows off of the beds, we know that he went up there because first of all, the pillows were taken and placed under their heads, and second, because a bloody hand print was found at the top of the stairs. The timing of the killings are really uncanny to me, that Charlie was able to kill the family between all the people coming and going on Christmas, the busiest day of the year for guests. I'm sure glad that Claude and Elijah, or anyone else, didn't come in on Charlie at the wrong time. Especially in domestic homicides, it's too common for the killer to murder bystanders, even more so than in other murders.

I agree Eric that anyone who walked in on Charlie Lawson while he was killing his family would have been killed also. This is the reason that I do not believe a young boy was there in the cabin that morning and witnessed two of the people killed. He supposedly ran out the back door and fled home and told his parents what was going on and as the book stated "they did not do anything." The story we heard from some of the people who were alive back then told us that in the community back then everyone helped everyone else whenever one of the members in the community needed help. They took food, and firewood to anyone in need, they gathered at the cabins when a death occurred and prepared the bodies and built the caskets, dug their graves, buried them, helped birth their babies, loaned each other money, paid that money back, etc. etc. They took care of each other from the moment of birth until the moment of burial. I do not believe those parents of that young boy would have stood by and done nothing when one of it's own was murdering his family. At the very least they would have called or run for the sheriff. And as bent as Charlie Lawson was on killing his family and himself I absolutely believe he would not have hesitated to kill a young boy or anyone else who stood in his way that day.

There is two things about that story of the young man being there that day and seeing the murders that I don't believe. FIRST I don't believe that if anybody else was there that day they lived to tell about it. Charlie would have killed or at least tried to kill whoever it was be it family, friend, or whoever. SECOND the community was well know for taking care of it's own. If this young man had ran home and told his family that Charlie was killing his family, I just don't believe they would have not done something. They would not have just set by and let it happen.
