Marie Lawson's boyfried Charlie Wade Hampton never said yay or nay as to whether Marie was pregnant or not. Being in love with Marie enough to want to marry her I believe if Marie was NOT pregnant Charlie Wade would have stood up in defense of her reputation and said that she was not. His silence on that is compelling evidence to me that she was. Just not by him. Maria

You know, I've never really thought of it that way... Was Charlie Wade still alive when the first Lawson book was released? doodlebug

Yes, I've never thought of it that way either. That's a very good point. The researching part of your brain never stops working Maria!! It certaintly does seem like he would have stood up for her and given a resounding "NO" she was not pregnant. Angel71242

If Charlie Wade Hampton knew that Marie was pregnant, I wonder if she told him who the father was. Certaintly he would want to know. She must have told him it was her father's, otherwise it would be hard to believe he would want to marry her thinking that she got pregnant by someone else. And what about her father, I wonder if he knew that Marie told Charlie Wade Hampton, and perhaps he was afraid he would spill the beans on him, and maybe even gotten mad enough to kill her and the rest of her family, thinking Marie may also have told her mother, and God knows who else. Maria, you brought up a good point here that brings up a lot of questions. Train

In answer to your question doodlebug, Charlie Wade Hampton died before the release of the first book. He died on November 10, 1972. Maria

I have no doubts that Charlie Wade Hampton knew EXACTLY who the father was. It says volumes about his character that he was still willing to get involved and get her out of there. Michael818

According to Charlie Wade Hampton's daughter he knew her father was the father of her baby and that he (Charlie Wade Hampton) was going to marry her to spare her and her family the shame it would cause. If you remember, in the weeks before the murders, as well as for many years after the murders, the only person's name mentioned by anyone as the father of her baby was her father, Charlie Lawson. Charlie Wade Hampton was never mentoned by any one as the father until many years after the murders when the accusations of incest became public. Why would so many relatives point the finger at one of their own if it was someone else's? Why would Fannie Lawson tell her sister-in-laws that her own husband was the father of their daughter's baby if it was someone else's? It would have been much less shameful for it to be her boyfriend's baby than for it to be one of their own relative's. It looks like Fannie Lawson would have cleared her husband's name and reputation if it wasn't true, just as Charlie Wade Hampton would surely have done if Marie was not pregnant in the first place. But neither Fannie Lawson nor Charlie Wade Hampton did that. Maria

Since Charlie Wade Hampton died before the ..."thing!!"...I wonder what he would have had to say when all the stir started. Would he have continued to keep his peace? Or would he have finally spoken out about it? doodlebug

Judging by what we know of his excellent character, I think he would still have kept his peace. He would not want to be the one to smear her reputation by speaking out about it publicly. I think he would rather take the blame than let Marie's family be shamed. Maria

Just hearing Gale talk about her father Charlie Wade Hampton, you could tell he was a man of high moral character. I think he knew who the father of Marie's baby was and that he loved her so much he wanted to protect her. I think he was gong to run away with her, marry her, and give her baby his name. Possibly move to another county or even another state. We know that Gale said that he kept the Christmas card Marie sent him for years after the murders, until it was lost in a fire along with him. That right there tells me ow much he loved her. Sissy

Funny Sissy that you said you thought Charlie Wade might have planned to move to another county because that is exactly what he did. Just not with Marie. He moved to Forsyth County where he lived until his death in a house fire in 1972. Maria

I have to agree with this train of reasoning. Like you said Maria, it was only her father's name that ever came up as being the father of her baby until many many years later. If there was a question that it could have been someone else's that person's name would have ome up back then. Angel71242
