I heard today from one of my sources that Charlie Wade Hampton died from smoke inhalation when his house caught fire and that his hand print could be seen on the wall right beside the front foor where he almost made it out. He collapsed near the front door and died shortly after the fireman pulled him out. Maria

That is so sad. Seems like a lot of people connected to the Lawson family had tragic endings to their lives. Sissy

it sure seems that way Sissy. Charlie Lawson's 3 year old neice burned to death in 1922. Her name was Ola and she was the daughter of Charlie's sister Docia. She was playng too close to the fire place in the kitchen and caught her dress on fire. Maria

Stella Lawson Boles (Charlie Lawson's neice) had a daughter named Shirley. She was crossing the railroad tracks when a train hit her and killed her. Charlie Lawon's brother Jim was killed in a car accident on his way one day to get a haircut. Jim's son Richard died in his early thirties of Leukemia. The list of names and tragic deaths reads like the Kennedy family. Maria

I was just looking at the new book TMOOT. On page 216 it quotes Gale James as saying that her daddy Charlie Wade Hampton suffered with severe headaches later in life. It then goes on to say he died of a brain tumor. Why would the author of TMOOT say that if Gale told you he died in a house fire? Looks to me like she mis-quoted Gale. I'm sure when Gale told youa few days agohow her daddy died she knew what she was talking about. It is just another case of the author twsting the words of people around to make it sound like she wants it to. That makes me so mad. Sissy

According to Gale the cause of the fire that took Charlie Wade's life was a lit cigarette left smouldering on he couch. Also, according to Gale it was her mother Annie Mae Taylor who died from a brain tumor when Gale was 6 years old. Charlie Wade Hampton died in November 1971. Maria

Thanks Maria for keeping us up to date on the history of the Charlie Lawson family and those closely involved with him in that time. You have done a great job keeping in touch with all of Charlie's family and friends and people in Stokes County, all the while doing research to find out what happened and then come in here and share it on the board where everyone can see it. Keep up the good work. Esther Johnson

Hi Sissy, I think Maria should have written the books about the Lawsons. At least she gets things correct. Doug Boulding

Thank you Sissy, Esther, and Doug for the compliments. I do try my best to get my information correct. Sometimes it isn't possible because a lot of it comes to me from other people and if it's wrong in their telling of it then it becomes wrong in my reporting of it. But if and when I find out I'm wrong I say so and correct the mistake. Maria
