Does anyone have a description of Charlie Wade Hampton's demeanor and/or what type of guy he was?
• What was he like?
• How old was he at the time of the Lawson family death?
• How did he meet Marie?
• How was the courtship between Marie and him?
• How long did it last with them?
• Was he very serious about her?
• Was he a "lady's man" or a just a simple church going man?
• Why did her father disagree with the courtship?
Just curious about why Marie was attracted to Mr. Hampton.

I was looking Through "The Meaning Of Our Tears" and on page 363 you will find a picture of Charlie Wade Hampton, he was a very nice looking man. I don't know that Charlie Lawson didn't like Charlie Wade. The only thing that I know was a supposed conversation between Charlie and Marie the morning of the murder and I don't believe that simply because nobody was at the scene to hear it. Oh as for his age I don't know check out www.ancestry.com or www.familysearch.com and I'm sure you can find all kind of genealogy stuff such as birth date and death date.

Charlie Wade Hampton was 20 years old when the murders occurred. He probably met Marie through his older brother Hillary Hampton who was Charlie Lawson's best friend. According to all I've heard about Charlie Wade he was VERY serious about Marie. Not just a "ladies man" type affair. He kept the Christmas card Marie sent him that year for the rest of his life. His son and daughter said that Charlie Wade never got over Marie but that he learned to live with it.

To give the author of WC/BC A TINY DEGREE OF CREDIT, she DID say in a section of the book that some things, including non-witnessed conversations were conjecture (read fiction). Though I feel that some things about WC/BC and TMOOT leave much to be desired, at least this "Reader beware" comment was made about these "conversations."

According to several sources Marie and Charlie Wade were planning on eloping that night (Christmas Day) after the Christmas play at the church. Just a few hours to safety. So close it's heart-breaking. If that info is correct that is.

If there was an argument between Charlie and Marie on Christmas morning concerning Marie's plans to go to a
Christmas play with Charlie Wade Hampton that night as we've heard there was, maybe Marie blurted out in
anger that she and Charlie Wade were not coming back that night, that they were going off and get married, and
so he killed them before Marie could get away from under his control and out of his home. What do you think?

I have this sick feeling that it did. you know how teenagers can be when they get mad. I can just hear Marie say, "well after tonight I won't be here anymore, me and Charlie Wade are getting married." Or something like that. I still think Charlie had been planning for 3 weeks to kill everyone but that he was just waiting for the right time and a revelation like that might have made him choose that very day.

I've never heard anything but good about him either. He was Gale James' father and she didn't get to be one of the nicest people to ever walk the face of the earth by having a bad person for a father. Charlie Wade Hampton's wife Annie Mae Taylor died when their daughter was 8 years old and their son Darrel was 6 so Charlie Wade raised them pretty much by himself. And they both turned out to be wonderful people. So I'd say all in all there was nothing but good in Charlie Wade Hampton.

I didn't even know Charlie Wade Hampton had raised his children by himself. I love how many details you come up with Maria in the lives of all these people. You bring them to life in so many more ways than just "Charlie Wade Hampton was Marie Lawson's boyfriend", or Hillary Wade Hampton was Charlie Lawson's best friend" etc. It's really great seeing them in more of their entirety than just one singular segment!!

I just find it strange that no one has ever said why Charlie Lawson was so opposed to Charlie Wade Hampton. That he didn't like him at all. If Charlie Lawson knew something so bad about Charlie Wade that he did not want his daughter to see him, don't you think someone would have known why and would have said what it was. And why would Charlie Lawson dislike the brother of his best friend Hillary Hampton so much? And why would Charlie be so against Marie going to the church play that night with Charlie Wade Hampton when he knew Arthur was going with them? Does anyone besides me question if the argument between Charlie and Marie even occurred Christmas Day, let alone have been over Charlie Wade? Or, if Charlie Lawson was indeed so opposed to Marie going to the play that night with Charlie Wade, then might not Gale James have been right when she said her father was planning to take Marie away and marry her in order to avoid the shame that was surely going to be caused by Marie being pregnant with out benefit of marriage.
