According to William Burrows, a Deputy Sheriff in Stokes County, a month before the murders, Thanksgiving Day to be exact, he went rabbit hunting with Charlie Lawson. Burrows was said to have stated to someone that he was aware that Charlie Lawson had a quick and violent temper but that on their hunting trip that Thanksgiving Day Charlie Lawson neither said or did anything unusual nor was their anything about his behavior to indicate that Charlie Lawson might not be sane. According to other people I've interviewed Charlie was acting peculiar and freaking out 3 weeks before the murders. That was only 1 week earlier that he had done nothing or said anything to indicate he was insane according to the Deputy Sheriff. So what caused this sudden burst of insane and erratic behavior?

Well that's the ten million dollar question. If we figure that one out - we'll be a lot closer to "understanding the meaning of our tears"!

I know I don't know very much about this topic overall but from what I've read and heard in here it doesn't seem to me like he was ever insane. He made a lot of bad choices in his life and they finally came back on him and he couldn't handle that. That's what! think. I think also that this man Charlie Lawson was morally and spiritually bankrupt.

I have to admit I agree with you Tim 100 percent about that. Charlie did indeed make some terrible choices and when confronted with everyone who had so much respect for him knowing about his terrible deed he couldn't face the consequences. I think he killed himself because he couldn't face his relatives and friends knowing that they knew he had done that. And I think he killed Fannie and the children to get back at Marie and Fannie for telling them that he had gotten her with child. I think that instead of blaming himself for his bad choices he blamed Marie for bringing it to light and Fannie for telling some of her relatives.

Even the mad can sometimes show a normal countenance. Perhaps Charlie was bi-polar to the extreme, or maybe he was good at controlling the madness when around those he needed to hide it from.

I really don't think Charlie Lawson suffered with Bipolar Disorder. We interviewed around 100 people, some who were directly related to him, some who were close friends, and others who were neighbors and while not close friends, knew him well and not one person ever described him in a way that even remotely suggested he was Bipolar. I've researched this story in-depth for 2 years now and no personality disorder ever cropped up. As you said Michael, a man can have two sides too him and hide the bad behind a mask when it suits him, I go along with that, but Bipolar is not easily hidden. It's acted out, extreme highs in the spring and summer with severe lows in the fall and winter. Without medication he could not have hidden the signs. But keep your posts coming, they do make us stop and think!

I have never personally read an incident which killing a family involves Bi Polar disorder. People with Bi Polar disorders are usually suicidal, which would be an answer as to why Charlie killed himself. But killing his family is usually not the case with this particular disorder. I personally believe that for whatever reason Charlie went ballistic that day, which I also believe was planned and killed his family. We may never know why........and then again we may if we keep digging into this mystery!!

I think he was just plain evil, not insane. What he did was crazy but I don't believe he was crazy. He did something really evil and it caught up with him and he made his whole family pay for it.

Charlie DEFINITELY showed signs of mental illness. Maybe what he did to Marie drove him further down the path to insanity, though. There is no doubt his actions were evil. I think most of us think he deserves to be roasting over The Lower Region's hottest pit, or WORSE. D***ed to walk the area til the end of time and the judgment, unable to communicate, or to do anything.

I agree Tim. While Charlie Lawson's actions that day were insane, I don't believe the man himself was. It's possible to act crazy without being crazy. I think he got his personal life so deeply into trouble that he couldn't find a way out other than to kill everyone and himself.

Yeah, no one mentioned any odd behavior- until right before the murders (2-3 weeks). If he was insane, people would have noticed odd behavior way before that.

Here is what I found out about Bi-polar
BiPolar people are not more violent than others, but they do become irrational. They can commit crimes. BiPolar people are also likely in their manic phase to indulge in drinking and drugs, which can lead to them losing control and acting violently. It's what they might do in a manic state, which in turn might lead to violence. They are not ever likely to have criminal intent.
