I learned recently that Chaffin School, a one room schoolhouse that was in use in Germanton before the Old Germanton School opened in 1923 and Tuttle Hardware in Walnut Cove, the Hardware Company that Boley Turtle's family owned (this was the Hardware Store that Boley Tuttle was standing outside in front of Christmas Eve when he saw Charlie Lawson ride up to the bank on the back of his mule. The bank was right across from Tuttle hardware, are still standing. As soon as the weather warms up I want to ride up there and take some photos of these two very old and historic buildings. Both of these buildings were in use back in what I refer to as the Lawson era. It's very possible that Arthur and Marie attended Chaffin School. Dorothy Watts Montgomery, one of Marie Lawson's best friend attended Chaffin School before The Old Germanton School was built and opened in 1923.

Awesome!!! I'm sure these buildings are empty right? Do you think you could get inside one or both of them?

I'm sure gonna try Angel. I know I can get in Tuttles Hardware because they are still open for business. Chaffin School is empty but hopefully it won't be locked.

Angel and I went over to check out Chaffin School yesterday. We couldn't get inside because it was locked up really tight but we were able to at least look in the windows. The school had been bought at some point by a family who added onto the back of the school to give it more rooms as a family dwelling. What we couldn't figure out is why the school had 2 front doors. They were side by side!! And on the left hand side of the school was a door and window and porch but no steps leading down to the ground, just a steep drop off. I sat on the right hand side of the front porch and tried to imagine Dorothy Watts going up those steps and in to that school. The image that kept projecting itself however was that of a group of youngsters lauging and talking out in the front of the school and towards the back of it. There was a building directly behind the school which may have been an outhouse but I'm not sure. They didn't have indoor plumbing back then so my guess is that it was the outhouse. One thing that really caught my attention about Chaffin School though is that it reminded me a whole lot of the house Arthur built.
